I watched Cspan today- there was a live press conference with our new Homeland Security Adviser, Frances Townsend. What an impressive lady! She was addressing our country's plan for a pandemic flu outbreak. It was so very imformative, I just wish these things were broadcast on the large networks. Basically, they have several steps for controlling any type of flu outbreaks- much thought and consideration to travel, exposure, etc was involved. You can check out the plan at www.pandemicflu.gov. The more we are all informed, the better we will all be if and when it does happen.
There has been no human to human transmission anywhere- only bird to bird. And with respects to our poultry that we consume, provided that you cook it well, you do not have to fear catching it from the chickens, ducks, pheasants, etc. There is going to be a "doomsday" movie broadcast on May 9th on ABC- making this look like it will be something very threatening, but what we must remember is that the people that caught it from birds- had the birds living in their homes, under their beds! And the whole thing about the vaccinations should not be a huge deal either- they have to have the actual flu in our country to make the vaccine. Yes, it does seem a little after the fact, but as Frances said, the good thing about this type of flu is that is slow spreading- not a kinetic catastrophy like Katrina or 9/11. After seeing this conference, I sure feel more secure with the facts.
