The child who does not speak

I read this framed story of this title on the wall at St. Joseph's Childrens'during our walks in the halls and it made me cry. I wish I had written it down, but from what I can recall it was this.
"I see the pity in your eyes because I do not speak. Don't pity me. The true pity should be directed to you for you are the one that must have the wisdom to know my needs, to understand what is hurting, to have the strength to watch me cry and to cry alone. I'm used to this life and it is not painful, I will talk in my way..."
It went on for a child that does not hear and for a child that does not walk. The part I wrote was what shook me. What I probably haven't written about is the fact that Tayton is not really talking yet. He will say Momma, Dadda, Sister, and cracker and that's about it. Of course the doctors are alarmed, he should be saying at least 10 words by now...that by 10 months they say. So they put my son in that box. He was a late walker and I guess I have assumed he will just be a late talker as well. It's not that his sibs do the talking for him or that he points and gets what he wants, he just doesn't really communicate. So while in Marshfield, they did some extensive testing on his ears. He thought it quite fun especially the bubble blowing. They used some pretty neat tricks to get him concentrate. His ears are fine, nothing to worry about. So then he doesn't talk... Well, this week, as if he knew, he's been trying to get out some words. He said car this morning, Grampa the other day, and "uh, oh" last night! So as I thought, it would hopefully just be IN his time. Just like how some come to know Jesus, it's in God's time. I'm learning that this patience in life is not about laziness, or lack of "getting it together", but in experiencing life and not pushing it through the eye of a needle.

Not to worry Gina Ken did not talk until he was almost 5....he just didn't have anything to say....Erin was a little slow in talking to but then she did have ear troubles. Tayton may be one those wise and special people who learn early on that its not always the best thing to speak all you know all at once...too bad more people aren't like that. but when he does....people listen. I think he will be just fine.
