It's just another storm I suppose. The weather channel doesn't give us Northerners much hoopla- what's ten inches of snow, what's wind chills reaching 15 below zero after having 30's. Not much compared to Atlanta, Georgia apparently. I have been watching the weather channel during our latest storm that came yesterday- it was named Daniel. Not by the weather channel- by the Wisconsin meteorologists. The weather channel barely even recognized this storm coming across Iowa- it was a huge system. Oh we heard all about New York and the snow they were getting, but nothing about Michigan.
I saw an email once that said how people that lived above the 45th parallel were forgotten by the government when we have storms. I think it's true in many ways. When we have a storm, FEMA doesn't come in to plow our roads or fix power lines and downed trees. We do it. Neighbors pitch in and help out. When we have wild fires, there's no national disaster area declared. Maybe they just know we have blood and guts to get things done on our own. Or they just could care less. Except when wildlife will be disturbed- don't you dare think about rolling anything with wheels, not even a cart, on the sand of the National Forest. That'll get you a good sized ticket- just ask my dad and Paul:-)
Even the mainstream politicians don't wander north of the 45th parallel- no they'll focus their efforts with the fine people of lower Michigan. Disgruntled- yeah a little. The Upper Michigan is forgotten alot. But we survive- even without much a voice. It's interesting to me that John McCain won nearly the entire UP, except the little county near the bridge. John McCain visited the UP last summer and it sure meant those votes. He wasn't even planning to run last summer, he just cares about the people of the UP. I'm still a Huckabee supporter, but John McCain has a twinkle in his eye for the UP and I respect that. Those other guys don't know what they are missing by passing over the UP. It's beautiful here today- the trees are heavy with thick white powdery snow. We got over a foot of snow yesterday. School was scheduled to be closed today anyway for the teachers so we don't even have a snow day technically with a foot of snow:-) Yeah we're tough! I snowblowed and shoveled and shoveled yesterday. We're clear off our roof in the next day or so. The wood boiler is keeping us nice and warm and it's just another day above the 45th parallel.
