The way it is...

when you're a mom. We all want healthy children- that's the number one thing on every new parent's mind - is my baby healthy? Ten fingers, ten toes, good apgar, can see, hear, and fall in love. It would be nice if they all stayed just as they were at birth- healthy. But the fact of the matter that has been brought to us is that, our kids get sick. You can give them vitamins, OJ, veggies, etc. but they just might still get sick. And so this is the way it is with Katia especially. She's always been the sick one the family. We've tried the flu shot, chiropractor, antibacterial hand wash in her desk at school, washing their hands when they come home. All but keeping them in a bubble! So when this glaucoma thing came up, the facts on the disease in children often point to an underlying condition. Of which just happen to be diabetes and leukemia both of which our families have a history of. So about a month ago I made an appointment with the pediatrician for Katia that we were just bringing Tayton to. I wasn't sure if this doctor would accept all our kids or just Tayton as he was referred from our doc in Marshfield. The receptionist told me that it was fine as long as they were all in the same household. Our appointment was yesterday morning in his Marquette office. I first have to point out that Katia hasn't had a physical in three years so it was time anyway to make sure everything was fine. We all too often bring the kids in to the walkin clinic for sicknesses, but seldom see a doctor. So I hope you all don't think I'm some kind of whack case nut job that is looking for problems.
Katia started with this cough on Saturday, it's been persistant, but not worrysome so I did mention it anyway. The dr. came in and did her physical and said that she had pneumonia. Wow, I was surprised since she didn't have a fever at all and so was the doctor. He asked me several times if she had a fever. He said, you know, with all the respiratory problems that she's had which normally turn into ear infections, he said he wanted to have her checked for cystic fibrosis. He also ordered some other tests that will be done on the 15th after she is completely recovered from this and then we'll see him again after Thanksgiving to go over everything. He's having her thyroid checked, her white cells, and some others I'm not sure of. So we had to go to the Marquette hospital yesterday after this appointment for a sweat Chloride test for the cystic fibrosis. It's a measure of things in your sweat and Katia was glad it wasn't a blood test. I talked to the Dr. today and everything was fine with that- praise God! I knew it would be, but it was nice to hear it since he seemed concerned. One hurdle crossed.
So hopefully the antibiotics will help her pneumonia this weekend. After supper tonight, Tayton got sick. He's throwing up every ten minutes or so and the only reason I'm able to write this now is because he's asleep! We didn't have anything with milk- chili and cornbread(I used his rice milk to make it) and no butter so I don't have a clue what's up with him. Sometimes it feels like there's not much of a plateau in our lives- no boredom. I long for that to happen to us. When we can go weeks, months, maybe even years without a tear. There is nothing scarier than having a sick child and it doesn't matter how old they are. There always seems to be this guilt that I carry that I'm not doing enough to keep them well and yet it's all I can do as a human. And that's all I can do, the rest is up to God.

Nope I had to use my own spices this time cause I didn't have my trusty old Chili-O mix. I put chili powder, cumin, garlic, pepper, etc. He puked all night long- every twenty minutes- long night! He's perking up now though. And Katia is coughing less too. I get alot of flack around here when my kids are sick- and yet the same flack when I bring them in to have them checked out. Sometimes you can just never quite measure up to what others think. Thanks for this post Tia!
